Abstract

Republik of Indonesia as a democratic country requires the political engagement of all citizens, including young female voters. Political engagement is influenced by psychological, socio-demographic, and macro-context factors. This study aimed to examine the relationship between national identity and political engagement in female novice voters, as well as to examine differences in national identity and political engagement in terms of Pancasila and citizenship course exposure.  The population of this study was female students of the Faculty of Psychology, Universitas Diponegoro.  Based on the simple random sampling technique, the sample engaged in this study was 260 female students. The measurement uses the National Identity Scale (13 items, α = 0.852) and the Political Engagement Scale (11 items, α = 0.855). Semi-strutured interviews were conducted with three female students to obtain in-depth information about factors influencing political engagement.  The results of the study show that thereis a significant positive relationship between national identity and political engagement in female novice voters.  Statistical analysis showed a correlation coefficient of 0.513 with a significance of 0.000 (p<0.05). National identity makes an effective contribution of 26.3% to political engagement.  The results also show that there are differences in national identity and political engagement in terms of Pancasila and citizenship course exposure.  Political engagement is self-motivated, family, social media, and courses that examine socio-political issues.  The research has implications for the government's urgency in understanding the political behavior of female novice voters so that they have the right strategy to increase their political engagement.
